A Time of Disappointment Podcast

In my Multimedia Journalism course, we were expected to come up with a story about a time where we faced disappointment. Once we had our story in mind we were told to write it out. I wrote down the first scenario that came to my head because after that it was hard to think of anything else.

I decided to stick with my first story and come back to change it if I needed to. After writing down our stories we were then told to start editing and recording. Initially, I wasn’t amazed with my story and felt that I could use a better one. So, realizing that I would have to take my story further made me feel unsure. However, I do believe that the story reflects my feelings of disappointment to a high degree, so it should be appropriate to tell.

After peer-reviewing each others stories I do believe that my flow became much more smooth when telling my story. I had a lot of unnecessary words that could’ve been omitted. I also had the chance to pair up with another classmate to have my story heard. I applied her feedback in order to improve my storytelling.

I learned over the process of storytelling that when all you have is sound, it makes it that much more important to make sure your audience is in tune with what you are talking about. Next time I write, I plan to evoke more emotion within my story and to limit the amount of irrelevant words I tend to use such as in my first draft. The original story was written almost a month ago, located below. Today, I recorded my final story.

“Myself and my best friend entered the home. In the home, there were six people in total. Before arriving to the home, a two hour drive took place to arrive at the destination. The energy given from every individual in the house felt off, uncomfortable, and unsure. My best friend and I enter the house with greetings, two hours go by, and nothing else is said. Going two hours away from home expecting a chill, fun, and good time quickly resulted into us realizing we completely wasted our time and energy. I learned this day that not everyone will do the things you’re willing to do, or even appreciate the things you have no problem doing. You don’t come across good people often, or people who are caring enough to dedicate time toward others.”

A Podcast for a Week: State of the Culture

For a while now I have been wanting to tune in to the popular Revolt TV show State of the Culture. State of the Culture premieres every Monday at 5 PM on Revolt TV and YouTube. I tuned in through YouTube because all of the episodes can be found there. I took the opportunity to view the show for a week and reflect on it.

State of the Culture features host Joe Budden and co-hosts Remy Ma, Scottie Beam, and Jinx. I was familiar with Joe Budden and Remy Ma from reality television and music, but Scottie Beam and Jinx were new faces to me. After watching the first episode of State of the Culture, I was pretty much eager to start the next one.

State of the Culture focuses on the most controversial and challenging conversations in pop culture, politics, and social justice—all through the lens of hip hop. The show is raw, real, and unfiltered, which is what I enjoyed the most. The topics discussed are sensitive and everyday situations that occur in America. Joe Budden and his hosts serve as our culture’s experts, paving the way for our culture to communicate with one another better.

Topics discussed during the program can range from music, to politics, to sexual assault, to discrimination. A couple examples being Colin Kaepernick protesting for the Black Lives Matter movement, consumers tuning in to the Superbowl, Bill Cosby conviction, and Zimmerman threats made to Jay-Z and Beyonce. The panel would all give their opinion to the topic and things would often get intense by the differences in opinion between the team.

I found out that Joe Budden has another podcast featuring himself called, The Joe Budden Podcast, with him as the host. The Joe Budden Podcast can be found on YouTube as well. I knew that I wanted to pick a podcast that I could easily relate to, so I’m glad that I chose this one as I continue watching new episodes. With State of the Culture dissecting the latest music, political, and social news, viewers should especially tune in to stay updated, entertained, and to form their own opinion.

The Flu takes over OU

At Oakland University, there is a health center located right on campus. I have never utilized the center, but I am sure that it has benefited many students on and off campus. The center isn’t meant for only students, others have the means to access the center if needed. Last week I attended one of the center’s events located in the main building on campus.

The Graham Health Center accepts walk ins so appointments aren’t always necessary, while offering convenient, affordable, and high quality health care. The center provides certified Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and a physician consultant who specializes in acne, colds, flu, muscle sprains, asthma, and high blood pressure, to name a few.

The Graham Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM except during Oakland University holiday closing, emergency closing, and for lunch hour which is Monday through Friday from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Currently, the flu vaccination is available for students. Oakland is now hosting what is known as, “Flu-a-palooza” throughout the month of November and December.

Flu-a-palooza is a flu clinic for students. Students are advised to bring their insurance card to get their flu vaccine and be a healthier student. Students are encouraged to spread the word and not the disease. Free vaccines are given to those who qualify. Flu-a-palooza is scheduled to be on campus on Nov. 7, Nov. 27, and Dec. 6, 2018.

On Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, I took the time out to attend one of the Flu-a-palooza’s in between classes. The Flu-a-palooza was located in the Oakland Center in front of the campus bank. Once I arrived to the event I took a second to observe the scene, then began capturing action shots of everyone at the station. With their permission, I captured photos of the event then compiled it into a slideshow.
